Last year’s Senior Boys 100 metres Coca-Cola Games gold medalist, Ilaitia Waqa of Queen Victoria School will not run in the blue ribbon event at this year’s Coca-Cola Games.
Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association Secretary, Vuli Waqa confirms that the Tailevu Zone officials have been informed that Ilaitia Waqa will not run in the 100 metres heats today as the association has now received confirmation that Waqa was disqualified in the Tailevu Zone heat.
Ilaitia Waqa was disqualified during the Tailevu Zone however the officials later announced that he has qualified for the Coca-Cola Games as he made the qualifying time in his heat.
It was also stated by the Tailevu officials that the starter was at fault in the final.
Vuli Waqa says they now have confirmation that Ilaitia Waqa was disqualified in the heat and did not even make it to the Tailevu Zone 100 metres final.
Meanwhile, Coca-Cola Marketing Manager Lawrence Tikaram has announced Fiji Airways partnership of $8000 with the Coca-Cola Games.
Tikaram says this year the gold medalists for the Blue Ribbon Event in the 100 metres Senior Boys and the Senior Girls will fly to Singapore or Hong Kong.
He adds that the Top Male Athlete and the Top Female Athlete will also be flying to either Australia or New Zealand.
More than 2,400 athletes from 143 schools around the country will be participating in the 2017 Coca-Cola Games.
The defending champions are Marist Brothers High School and Jasper Williams High School.
The Coca-Cola Games will start at 2pm today at the ANZ Stadium and will end on Saturday.
The events that will be held today are the 100 metres and 400 metres heats, 1,500 metres and some field events.
The Coke Games 100 metres heats will start at about 3.30pm today at the ANZ Stadium.
