As Tropical Cyclone Gita slowly passes over the island of Ono-I-Lau, villages in Nukuni, Lovoni, Doi and Matokana are currently experiencing the full brunt of the destructive winds and heavy rain.

The last communication we had was with 61-year-old Eyasi Waqabaca from Doi village in the last hour.

Waqabaca says they can see heavy swells that are over 5 metres high and some houses were shaken by the strong winds.

Our interview got cut off as we could hear the sound of strong winds and heavy rain.

In Fulaga, Joji Vulaono who is speaking from Fulaga District School says they have been experiencing strong winds with Evacuation Centres already set up for the villagers.

Vulaono says they have chopped down long coconut trees and big trees to avoid trees falling on houses and causing more damage to their homes.

In Tubou, Lakeba, Jekesoni Yaqona confirms they are starting to experience strong winds and heavy swells.

In Udu village in the island of Totoya, Viliame Matakitoga says that the villages have been evacuate to Navesi Primary School as they are currently experiencing strong winds and heavy rain.

Matakitoga adds that they can also see heavy swells on the coastline areas and are making sure everyone is safe.

Meanwhile Police Acting Chief Operations, ACP Maretino Qiolevu says they are also trying to get reports from Southern Lau and will continue to monitor the current weather situation.
