Muslims all over the world today begin fasting as the moon was sighted last night for the beginning of the holy month of Ramadhan.

The month of Ramadhan is where Muslims fast for 29‑30 days depending on the moon.

Ramadhan is considered to be one of the most blessed months in the Islamic calendar as the holy book Quran narrates that during this month Satan is locked up so there are no disruptions to the good deeds by Muslims all over the world.

A special prayer is also offered during the month of ramadhan in addition to the 5 obligatory prayers.

Amin Khan who is a teacher of Islamic studies at Suva Muslim College says this is the month of blessings.

Khan says this is when Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk.

He says this month helps Muslims all over the world to build their character in terms of modesty and humility.

The end of the month of Ramadhan marks the festival of Eid‑ul-Fitr where the famous sewai is shared amongst all friends and families.
