Upgrade works at the Lautoka Hospital's Accident and Emergency Department and Operating Theater is 50% complete.
Ministry of Health spokesperson Sunil Chandra said the work is expected to finish in March Next year.
Chandra said the upgraded Accident and Emergency Department and Operating Theater will cater for surrounding towns as it will be fully equipped and will be able to handle critical patients.
He said the delay in arrival of equipment’s from overseas and the availability of rooms in the hospital are some of the reasons why the completion of the project is taking up time.
Meanwhile an increase in employment opportunities for medical officers is expected to be seen once the extension and upgrade work has been completed.
The cost of this upgrade and extension project is $12.4 million.
