Fiji Airways has announced that Wellington Airport passengers will be the first in New Zealand to experience Fiji Airways’ new Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft when it launches on the Wellington to Nadi service from December 2018.  

The new aircraft will be more fuel efficient, have modern cabin interiors and amenities including seatback inflight entertainment and leather seats, larger overhead luggage storage and reduced cabin noise.

Fiji Airways will be the first airline in the region to receive delivery of the more than 4,500 Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft on order around the world.

Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO Andre Viljoen says they are excited to announce Wellington as the first airport in New Zealand to receive the airline’s brand new B737 MAX 8 aircraft after it arrives factory‑fresh.

Viljoen says Fiji Airways will combine the state‑of‑the‑art features of the MAX 8 with it’s world renowned Fijian hospitality on board, giving guests from the New Zealand Capital more than just a comfortable flight to Fiji.

Wellington Airport Chief Executive Steve Sanderson says the new Boeing 737 Max 8 provides a fantastic direct flight option for those living in Wellington and the wider region.

Fiji Airways’ departs Wellington to Nadi on Thursdays and Sundays.

The airline company had announced that it was planning to get five new Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes in its fleet. It was announced that two planes will be delivered in 2018 while three will be delivered in 2019. The new planes will have the capacity to carry 170 passengers with a larger cabin area.

Viljoen said that the new planes will reduce their fuel costs by 15 percent.

The 12 year leasing arrangement with the Boeing consortium is confidential however the list price of each plane is 100 million US dollars.
