Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says they want to identify goat farms which supply meat to supermarkets because goat meat is very lean.
Sayed-Khaiyum says there is a farm between Tavua and Ba and they already have 1,000 goats.
He says this farm has been asked by New World Supermarket to supply them goat meat on a daily basis and in a professional manner.
$200,000 has been allocated in the 2018/2019 National Budget for goat extension development to supply quality breeding stock to cluster groups and commercial goat farms.
A further $1 million has been allocated to establish Fiji’s goat meat industry through the provision of services and infrastructural development, aimed to further improve the supply of affordable, quality meat to market.
Sayed-Khaiyum says this funding is essentially to identify one or two companies that can really bring up the goat meat industry where they can supply to the supermarkets.
We have sent questions to the Ministry of Agriculture in relation to the implementation of these new initiatives and the expected outcomes for the goat meat industry in the new financial year. A response is expected soon.
