17-year-old Zion Tokana has set a new record by winning silver medals in both the junior and youth categories at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships that is currently underway at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.

In a remarkable display of strength and perseverance, Tokana lifted a massive 140kg on his third attempt.

He began the competition with a successful lift of 125kg but narrowly missed 130kg on his second try.

Despite the setback, he made a stunning recovery to lift an incredible 160kg, bringing his total to 290kg.

India’s Parv Chaunday won gold medals for both junior and youth categories.

Meanwhile, team Fiji’s Olimaipa Secivo and Elizabeth Waqavou will compete in the Women’s 81kg competition, while Sinate Savou and Fiji-born Australian lifter Eileen Cikamatana will compete in the Women’s +81kg category later this afternoon.

The championship, which concludes tomorrow, features 250 athletes from 25 countries.
