Fiji Airways men’s national 7s coach Ben Gollings says the team is hungry to win gold in the Commonwealth Games and they have set it as a new challenge.
Fiji has never won gold in 7s rugby in the Commonwealth Games. The team settled for silver in 1998, 2002 and 2018 Games and bronze in 2006.
Gollings says the team to the Rio Olympics wrote history when they won Fiji’s first gold and then rewrote history with the gold medal win at the Tokyo Olympics.
He says there’s a hunger to go and win the first 7s gold in the Commonwealth Games, but if they can back that up with a win in the 7s World Cup in September, then they will be sitting with a team that holds all three in one camp, which hasn’t been done before.
Fiji is pooled with Canada, Wales and Zambia.
Defending champions New Zealand is in Pool A with England, Samoa and Sri Lanka while South Africa, Scotland, Tonga and Malaysia are in Pool B.
Pool D has Australia, Kenya, Uganda and Jamaica.
The 7s competition will start next Friday.
