Creating more opportunities for women in sports, the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre donated a $20,000 sponsorship to the Suva Volleyball Association that will directly support the Suva Indoor and Beach Volleyball women’s teams who are preparing to represent Fiji at the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Palau this June.

While speaking at the handover, Suva Volleyball Association Vice President Semaima Lagilagi acknowledged the 16-year partnership with FWCC, crediting the collaboration for enabling many women athletes to pursue sporting excellence at the regional level.

Lagilagi says this generous support has consistently allowed their athletes, especially their women, to access regional competitions and proudly represent Fiji.

She says the partnership they forged years ago has not only opened doors for participation but has empowered their players and strengthened their sense of national pride.

FWCC Coordinator Shamima Ali reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to empowering women and girls through sport.

She also issued a call for the government to review its current funding strategy for minor sports—particularly in the lead-up to major regional events such as the Pacific Games and Mini Games.

She noted that over the past decade, FWCC has increasingly been approached by national sporting federations seeking financial assistance to support participation in sanctioned tournaments—particularly to cover levies and other essential preparation costs such as training equipment, recovery sessions, and related needs.

The FWCC’s continued support highlights its broader mission to promote gender equality and empower women and girls in all sectors of society, including sport.
