The Suva Rugby Union side has received a major boost for their 2025 Skipper Cup campaign after the Suva City Council approved part of Karsanji Bhindi Park – Bhindi Industrial for the Union to use.
SRU Chairman Colonel Viliame Draunibaka says while the formal arrangements are in motion, this was a great day for sports development and the numerous Suva communities and urban settlements served by the Suva Rugby Union.
Draunibaka acknowledged the Suva City Council for recognizing the Union’s need and vision for more spaces for sports infrastructure to serve communities and sports teams and enable them to play in great grounds and conditions.
He says the Suva Rugby Union has served Suva’s communities for over 100 years, giving many young men and women the opportunity to play for a club or community team and stay engaged in a healthy and wholesome activity and away from crime and drugs.
He adds that through the Suva Rugby Union, many young men and women have been identified and chosen to join the Fijian Drua and Flying Fijians, secure overseas rugby contracts and also secure work with the Military, Police and Corrections services.
Draunibaka says over the years, the SRU has been severely affected by the unavailability of good playing grounds to run their competitions, and has been looking to secure spaces to develop proper playing grounds to serve the over 40 clubs and community teams that play in the union.
He says the SRU has worked long and hard to secure the requested space and is hopeful all the necessary arrangements will be finalized soon.
