Melbourne Storm have extended the South Sydney Rabbitohs’ winless streak in the Victorian capital after Jahrome Hughes orchestrated a hard-fought 24-16 victory.
The Rabbitohs are now 0-20 in Melbourne and will need to quickly regroup before next week’s Magic Round clash with Newcastle.
South Sydney fought hard but the Storm ultimately had too much class behind Dally M Medal winner Jahrome Hughes.
The halfback controlled proceedings and played superb wet-weather football to steer his side to victory in front of 26,010 fans at a sold-out AAMI Park.
Melbourne’s win closed out an emotional ANZAC Day triple-header, with Sandon Smith producing the best game of his career to lead the Sydney Roosters past St George Illawarra in the opening match of the day.
The Dragons were on the back foot from the opening set of six and ultimately fell 46-18.
The action then crossed the Tasman, where the Warriors toppled Newcastle Knights 26-12 at a sold-out Apollo Projects Stadium in Christchurch.
The Knights’ attacking woes continued on a night where the Warriors forward Jackson Ford crossed for the first double of his career.
