Short turnaround fails to deter SGS athletes as Suva Zone 2 is underway

The short turnaround and change of zone dates did not deter the Suva Grammar School athletes as they look to create something special in this year’s Coca-Cola Suva Zone 2 competition that is underway at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

Coach Jone Delai says they just had their inter-house 10 days ago and were told that the Zone would be in week 11, but they were given short notice that it was going to be this weekend.

Delai says they raced against time to prepare for this meet, but the athletes managed to adapt well.

He says some of the athletes complained about the short turnaround, but he urged them that there’s not much they can do and that they just have to come ready for the meet.

The former Fiji sprinter says there’s nothing much that he and his coaching staff are expecting from the athletes and adds as long as the athletes are happy with their performance, the coaches are happy.

Delai says they still have most of their gold medal prospects from last year and some new ones, and he is confident that they are in a good place.

The 400-metre heats are currently underway.

Meanwhile, Marist Brothers High School is leading the unofficial medal tally in the boys' division with 3 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze, Suva Grammar is second with 2 gold, and Jai Narayan College is third with 1 gold.
