The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is mourning the loss of former Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s Manager Waisea Mataitoga, a beloved figure in Fijian rugby, who passed away recently.
According to FRU, Mataitoga's untimely passing has left a void in the hearts of many within the rugby community and beyond.
Mataitoga dedicated his life to nurturing and developing rugby in Fiji, earning respect and admiration for his unwavering commitment and played an instrumental role as the manager of the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team, working closely with coach Saiasi Fuli from 2022 to 2023.
His passion for the sport led him to take on the role of Sports World Fiji Under-20 team manager earlier this month, a testament to his enduring dedication to Fijian rugby.
Mataitoga also carried the proud honour of managing the Vodafone Deans-winning Queen Victoria School U18 team this year, further cementing his legacy as a leader and mentor.
Yesterday, FRU staff, board members, and U20 players gathered to present their traditional farewell or ireguregu in Mataitoga’s honour, reflecting on his immense contributions to the sport and the lives he touched.
The Fiji Rugby vuvale and the broader community have been deeply affected by his passing, remembering him as more than just a manager—he was a guiding light and an inspiration.
At 7pm today, Mataitoga will make his final journey with his family to his village in Nawaikama, Gau, where he will be laid to rest.
