Being selected to captain the side in the first leg of the 2024/2025 HSBC SVNS World Series boosted Fiji Airways National Men’s 7s forward Jerry Matana’s morale and gave him more reason to keep pushing for greater heights.
Matana says he did not think that he would be named to lead the side but after he was selected, he was grateful for the opportunity.
The 26-year-old says he did not know what capabilities coach Osea Kolinisau saw in him to select him as captain but he was thankful and vowed to live up to the expectations of the coach and the fans.
Matana is expected to captain the side again to the upcoming HSBC Perth 7s if selected, but only time will tell after the selection of the final 13-man squad this weekend.
Meanwhile, the Fiji 7s squad to play in the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji’s Coral Coast 7s for this weekend is expected to be named today, and the team for the Perth 7s will be named after the conclusion of the Coral Coast 7s this Saturday.
Fiji will take on Uruguay at 3.22pm next Friday in their first pool match, they will then take on Kenya at 7.59pm Friday before playing New Zealand at 4.22pm next Saturday in their final pool match.
The Men’s Cup quarter finals will kick off at 9.27pm next Saturday, the semi finals will be at 7.05pm Sunday and the cup final will kick off at 11.35pm.
