Grants Waterhouse Manager, Vijendra Kumar says this year's Melbourne Cup is an open race.

Kumar says there are some favorites this year but others should not be ruled out.

He says horses that people can look out for is Mer De Glace from Japan, Constantinople from Ireland and Finche who came fourth last from Great Britian.

He says last year's Melbourne Cup winner Cross Counter will have to overcome a 6.5kg weight rise.

Kumar says last year the highest payout they made was about $12,000.

A whopping 8 million Australian Dollars, is what is at stake at this year’s Melbourne Cup up from 7.3 million dollars last year.

This will be the 158th running of the Melbourne Cup.

The Melbourne Cup will start 4 o'clock this afternoon at the Flemington Racecourse in Australia.
