Tavua College long distance runner Avishek Avinesh Kumar is aiming to win gold in the 3,000 metres open grade in next week’s Coca Cola Games.

Kumar won the 3,000 metres event during the Lautoka Zone Meet with a time of 9 minutes 49 seconds.

The year 10 student who won the bronze last year will be up against last year’s silver medallist Kelemete Sau of Vaturova Koroalau.

Suva Grammar School’s Inia Sili won gold in 3,000 metres open grade last year.

However he is not running in this event this year.

Kumar said he has stepped up his training with only a few days remaining for the Fiji finals.

He ran last year for Tavua College in the 4x400m Junior boys relay team that settled for 4th place.

Tavua College finished in 6th place in the boys division after winning two gold medals last year.

The Coca Cola Games will be held next Friday and Saturday at the ANZ Stadium.
