Switzerland pulled off the biggest shock so far at the FIFA World Cup as Gelson Fernandes's strike against the run of play earned them a 1 0 win against European champions and joint tournament favourites Spain.
Spain predictably dominated possession but was hit on the break seven minutes into the second half as the Swiss recorded a first win over Spain in 19 attempts.
The European champions from Spain enjoyed almost total control of the game in Durban but were wasteful in front of goal, and went behind after 52 minutes when a long ball found its way through to Fernandes, who bundled it into the net.
The result piles pressure on Spain, who were widely tipped to finally end decades of underachievement on the game's biggest stage as they slumped to only their second defeat in 49 games and they could now be forced to face Brazil in the second round if they finish Group H as runners-up.
As it was, Switzerland held firm for a truly memorable victory for their first in a World Cup opener since 1954.
Spain endured only further frustration and they will need to rebound against Honduras at Ellis Park on 22nd June.
The Swiss take on Chile, the other Group H winners, earlier that same day in Nelson Mandela Bay.
In other results last night, Chile beat Honduras 1-nil and in the game just finished, Uruguay beat South Africa 3-0.
