I’m excited to play in Fiji and will try my best to win the Fiji International Golf Tournament.
Those are the words of champion Fiji born international golfer and former world number one, Vijay Singh who will play at the Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course from this morning.
Singh who also said that he may be interested in playing for Fiji if it is sending a golf team to the 2016 Olympics, is happy to see the completion of the golf course that he designed and has already spoken to the course owners to make some amendments.
Singh said the pressure will be on him to win the title for the people of Fiji and hopes things will go his way.
He added that organisers should have given at least five spots to local golfers without qualifying for the tournament.
Singh hopes this is done in the next four tournaments.
He has also revealed that he may have a Golf Academy in Fiji in the future.
Singh hopes the Fiji International Golf tournament will result in more children taking interest in playing golf.
Meanwhile, Nick Price who has won three major championships in his career has also set his sight on winning the title but he says it will be a joy to watch Vijay Singh win a title on his home turf.
Price added that it will be hard for him to concentrate because of the beautiful views in Natadola.
120 professional golfers will play in the championship.
The Fiji Golf International will be broadcast to 40 countries with a potential reach to 400 million homes around the World.
The winning golfer will walk away with 1 million US dollars.
Round one started at 6.30 this morning and will continue until Sunday.
