The girls from Saint Joseph’s Secondary School are expected to cause some major upsets in this weekend’s Coca-Cola Games after their dominant performance in the Suva Zone 2 this year.
Last year, St Joseph’s finished with four gold, five silver and eight bronze medals.
From their results at this year’s Suva Zone 2, we can see that the girl's division will go into a four-way battle between defending champion Adi Cakobau School, former champions Jasper Williams High School, Suva Grammar School and St Joseph’s Secondary.
St Joseph’s Athletics Manager Lanieta Rakanace says they started their off-season training in October last year and have been working with their coaches Bola Tafou, Banuve Tabakaucoro and Sisilia Seavula.
Some athletes to look out for from St Joseph’s include Heleina Young who will be running in the Intermediate Girls 100 and 400 metres, Louisa Tubailagi in the Junior Girls 100m, Sisilia Tukidia in the Sub Junior Girls High Jump, Tera Narayan in the Inter Girls High Jump, Avelina Navue in the Sub Junior Girls Long Jump, Tarairi Erasito in Junior Girls Shot Put and Phylippa Pickering in the Sub Junior Girls Shot Put.
Meanwhile Fiji Secondary School Athletics Association Secretary Vuli Waqa has confirmed that the grandstand tickets have been sold out.
The Coca-Cola Games will be held from Thursday to Saturday at the ANZ Stadium.
The defending champions are Natabua High School and Adi Cakobau School for the boys and girls divisions respectively.
