Richie McCaw said he was shocked by the sudden death of Jonah Lomu, a player whose superstar status was quickly rammed home to him on his first All Blacks tour.
McCaw, the double World Cup‑winning captain, announced his retirement from rugby in Wellington today, ending a 148‑test career that started in 2001 when Lomu was already established as a giant in the game.
McCaw admitted he had thought twice about announcing his retirement a day after the unexpected death of Lomu at the age of 40. But he was quick to pay his respects.
