All Blacks and Chiefs tight head prop Nepo Laulala will be out of action for the rest of the season after sustaining a sickening knee injury in training.

Scans have revealed that during training, Laulala tore three ligaments in his right knee.

He will undergo knee reconstruction surgery in the near future and the expected recovery time is 12 months, ruling 24‑year‑old Laulala out of all rugby for 2016.

In another injury blow, one‑Test All Black Dominic Bird will sit out the first 10 weeks of Super Rugby after fracturing his right foot.

The 24‑year‑old lock was also injured during training.

Super Rugby starts on the 26th of next month.
