Ireland scored two tries from Jacob Stockdale plus a penalty try.
Ireland led 22-3 at half time.
Wales came back firing in the second half with tries from Owen Lane and Rhys Patchel.
Wales will take on Ireland in their second test on the 7th of this month.
In other results, Scotland thumped Georgia 44-10, France thrashed Italy 47-19, Fiji defeated Tonga 29-19 while Samoa thumped New Zealand Heartland 36-19.
