From the moment England won the inaugural tournament in 1993 to Wales’ shock success in 2009, the Rugby World Cup Sevens has always been a tournament full of surprises.
England won in 1993, New Zealand in 2001, Wales in 2009 and New Zealand again in 2013.
In 1997, Waisale Serevi led Fiji to one of the greatest games of sevens ever seen and one that kept the 40,000 crowd on the edge of their seats until Fiji emerged 24‑21 victors over South Africa.
In 2005, Hong Kong became the first country to host two Rugby World Cup Sevens and Fiji the first to win the competition twice after dethroning New Zealand in front of another sell‑out crowd.
Fiji had to dig deep to overcome Argentina 22‑14, and needed a sudden‑death extra‑time score from Serevi to make the final and deny England the chance to hold both the Webb Ellis and Melrose Cups at the same time.
The national sevens side then claimed the RWC Sevens title in an amazing show of power and strength, defeating New Zealand 29‑19.
Meanwhile Fiji coach Gareth Baber says they are expecting huge support for Fiji in San Francisco next weekend.
Semi Radradra has joined the team in Utah. They will be travelling to San Francisco this weekend.
Baber will name his final 12 next Wednesday.
The Rugby World Cup 7s will be held from next Saturday to Monday July 23rd.
Fiji’s first game will be against either Japan or Uruguay at 3.53pm next Saturday.
