Chiefs utility Andrew Horrell has signed a two‑year contract to play in Japan and doesn't know if he will make a return to Super Rugby.

Horrell who turns 28 this month will join the Coca‑Cola Red Sparks in Fukoka later this year.

Having joined the Chiefs in 2012 in the same year as coach Dave Rennie, Horrell has played 54 games for the franchise.

But with his favoured midfield spots now locked down by Charlie Ngatai, Anton Lienert‑Brown and Seta Tamanivalu, and Aaron Cruden and Damian McKenzie occupying the No 10 and 15 jerseys, Horrell is finding game‑time much harder to come by.

The Chiefs will face the Reds at 9.40pm Friday while the Blues will host the Brumbies at 7.35pm.
