Germany is the new champion of the FIFA World Cup after beating Argentina 1-0 in extra time.

This is the fourth time for the Germans to win the World Cup.

Replacement player Mario Gotze scored the winner for the Germans in the second spell of extra time.

This is also the first time for a European team to win the World Cup on South American soil.

Meanwhile, Colombia’s James Rodriguez won the Golden Boot as the top scorer at the World Cup.

Rodriguez scored six times in five matches.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi was named Player of the Tournament and received the Golden Ball award while German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer received the Golden Glove award as the top keeper.

Germany did not only win the 18 carat trophy but they also won about FJD$65 million prize money while Argentina took home about FJD$50 million.

It’s fitting that the largest prize in World Cup history was distributed in the most expensive World Cup in history.

Spain, winner of the 2010 World Cup, received about FJD$60 million.

FIFA paid out about FJD$900 million in prize money.

That prize money is in addition to the $3 million each nation was given prior to the tournament for training, travel and other expenses.
