Former Wallaby Israel Folau has reached a settlement with Rugby Australia and New South Wales Rugby after days of mediation over his controversial sacking for writing anti-gay posts on social media.
He had been suing Rugby Australia for AUD $14 million after having his contract terminated in May.
Folau, a Christian, argued that the termination of his contract was a case of religious discrimination.
In a statement this afternoon, Rugby Australia said the parties had settled for a confidential amount.
Rugby Australia says the social media post reflected Folau’s genuinely held religious beliefs, and Folau did not intend to harm or offend any person when he uploaded the social media post.
The statement further says Folau wants all Australians to know that he does not condone discrimination of any kind against any person on the grounds of their sexuality and that he shares Rugby Australia’s commitment to inclusiveness and diversity.
Rugby Australia and NSW Rugby also say they do not in any way agree with the content of the social media post.
They say inclusiveness is one of Rugby’s core values and it welcomes all people to the game, including all members of the LGBTIQ community.
The statement says while it was not Rugby Australia’s intention, Rugby Australia acknowledges and apologises for any hurt or harm caused to the Folau's.
Folau was sacked for saying "hell awaits" gay people, after previously being warned over his social media posts.
