Dean wins first gold medal at Arafura Games

Young Fiji long distance runner, 16-year-old Zubair Dean won Fiji's first gold medal in the U18 Men's 1,500m event at the Arafura Games in Darwin.

This was also his first in an international event.

Fiji also won a silver medal to Paralympian Timoci Serevi in the Men's ambulant Discus event.

The Oceania Paralympic Championships are being run in conjunction with the Arafura Games.

This year Fiji has a small team of 15 athletes and officials participating in just two sports: athletics and weightlifting.

The weightlifting competition will start tomorrow at the Darwin Entertainment Centre.

Manueli Tulo arrived from Noumea last night with Paul Coffa and the rest of the members of the Oceania Weightlifting Institute, while the remaining Fiji weightlifting team of five arrived last night.
