Best/Worst moments of 2007

With the 2007 season coming to end today, we bring you some of the best and worst moments in sports this year.

One of the best moments was when the FMF Flying Fijians reached the quarterfinals of the Rugby World Cup under the guidance of Coach Ilivasi Tabua.

Despite playing in the quarterfinals Fiji is ranked 9th in the World. They started the tournament with a win over Japan 35-31, then beat Canada 29-16. Fiji lost their third pool match to Australia 12-55 but bounced back to beat Wales 38-34 and put up one of their best performance against South Africa in the quarterfinal losing the match 20-37.

Another Good moment for us was when Fiji Bati side qualified for 2008 Rugby League World Cup. They qualified from the Pacific Qualifying competition after beating Tonga 30-28 and Cook Islands 40-4.

There were also good moments for our local soccer teams. Labasa created history by winning this year's National Soccer League crown after 16 years and Ba winning the CVC, Fiji Fact, BOG and IDC titles this season and qualifying for the O-League playoffs.

Team Fiji also had success in the Pacific Games in Samoa despite finishing 4th on the overall medal tally.

They won 40 gold, 54 silver and 42 bronze. But the highlight was youngest member of the team Akesa Drotini winning the women's 5000 meters gold medal as she ran barefoot.

Meanwhile, the worst moment this season was when Fiji 7's team failed to retain the 2006 / 2007 IRB 7's Series title. The side lost to Wales in the quarterfinals 14-21, as they only needed to reach the semifinals to retain the title.

Fiji 7's maestro Waisale Serevi also lost his job as Fiji 7's coach, which was handed over to his assistant Joe Savou.

More bad news came just before the Rugby World Cup when elusive wing, Rupeni Caucau was banned for smoking marijuana and left out of the Rugby World Cup.

There was also bad news when Fiji soccer team failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup soccer playoff's losing to New Zealand and New Caledonia in the qualifying rounds.

Now we hope that 2008 will bring more success in Sports.
