All Blacks first‑five Beauden Barrett could be about to make a shock move from the Hurricanes to the Blues a transfer a long time in the making which would have a huge impact on both teams.
The two‑time World Rugby Player of the Year was close to joining the Blues in 2016 instead signing again with the Hurricanes, where he has been since 2011.
The New Zealand Herald reports that the Blues have never given up on getting Barrett and are privately hoping they have done enough to get him over the line this time.
Barrett is the one key All Black yet to declare his intentions after this year and initially wanted to announce his re‑commitment to New Zealand Rugby alongside Brodie Retallick, who released his contract news yesterday.
New Zealand Herald reports Barrett may be holding off on the announcement because he does not want to serve as a potential distraction to the Hurricanes, who play the Blues this Saturday, and have already qualified for a home quarter‑final.
Blues Chief Executive Michael Redman says their policy remains unchanged and they never comment on speculation around player or staff recruitment.
If he does make the switch Barrett won't play for the Blues until 2021 because he is planning to take a sabbatical next year.
That could involve playing in Japan or Europe, or simply taking some time off.
Another big factor is that Barrett’s wife Hannah Laity lives in Auckland.
In Super Rugby this week the Highlanders will take on the Waratahs at 7.35pm Friday while the Rebels will face the Chiefs at 9.45pm Friday.
The Jaguares will host the Sunwolves at 10.10am Saturday the Hurricanes will take on the Blues at 7.35pm Saturday while the Brumbies will face the Reds at 9.45pm Saturday.
The Stormers will host the Sharks at 1.05am Sunday while the Bulls will take on the Lions at 3.15am Sunday.
