Team Fiji’s 100 metre sprint king Banuve Tabakaucoro has the capability of breaking Jone Delai’s 10.34 seconds Pacific Games record.
Delai who dominated the 100 and 200 metre events in the region from 1995 said the challenge is for Tabakaucoro to stay focused and also have a good start in his race.
The 44-year-old who won the 100 metre in Samoa in 2007 with a record time believes that the Marist Brothers High School student has the speed to win the blue ribbon gold medal.
Tabakaucoro clocked a time of 11.02 seconds and the closest to him was Papua New Guinea’s Ruwan Gunasinghe who clocked a time of 11.04 seconds in the heats last night.
Nikotimo Radiva will also run with Tabakaucoro in the semifinals today at 5.40pm with the final at 8.30pm.
The women’s 100 metre final will start at 8pm where Sisilia Seavula is one of the top favorites after clocking a time of 12.45 seconds while fellow sprinter Paulini Korowaqa will also be in the final after clocking a time of 12.63 seconds.
PNG’s Wisil Toea clocked the fastest time of 12.25 seconds in the heats.
The Fiji Men’s Basketball team will play Guam in the semifinals at 4pm while the Fiji Women’s Basketball team will take on New Caledonia at 7pm.
Looking at the medal tally: New Caledonia maintains the lead with 67 gold, 55 silver and 26 bronze, Tahiti is second with 30 gold, 18 silver and 16 bronze.
Fiji is third with 16 gold, 18 silver and 25 bronze medals.
