7s Could Be Included In Next Olympic Games

Sevens rugby could be included as an Olympic sport at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

This was the view of the International Rugby Board Sevens Tournament Director, Beth Coalter, after watching the George 7s tournament in South Africa.

She said the Chairperson of the IRB, Bernard Lapasset, was working very hard to ensure that Sevens rugby would be accepted as one of the Olympic sports.

The IRB expects to have an answer from the International Olympics Committee by October 9th next year.

Coalter said there is a possibility that they will be able to take part as early as 2010. He said winners won't receive medals though, but will have demonstration matches only.

If these trials in London are a success, there is a strong possibility that Sevens rugby would be included in the 2016 Olympic Games as an official Olympic sport.
