President Jioji Konrote says if Fiji does not have a legal system that works for everyone, then we don’t have real democracy.
While opening the 17th Attorney General’s Conference at the Intercontinental Hotel in Natadola, Konrote says if every Fijian is not equal before the law, then Fiji’s democracy is walking crippled into the future.
He adds that the conference will not only benefit the legal profession but the wider Fijian community as well.
President Konrote says Fiji needs to be prepared to confront the legal implications and concerns as new technologies and ideas reach our shores.
He says currently there are few laws in place to address this emerging technology and hopes the discussions in the conference will weigh the costs and benefits of such technology and provide meaningful insight into how stringent Fiji’s regulation of drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles should become.
Konrote adds that the nation should also strive to protect Fijians from the threat of cyber-terrorism.
He adds that the government is embracing technology like never before and more Fijians are becoming a part of the digital economy every day and when Fiji takes the leap into the future, it needs to avoid the pitfalls that can put Fiji’s most valuable information at risk.
The Attorney-General’s conference will end tomorrow.
