Typhoon Lan is barreling towards Japan with the equivalent power of a category 4 hurricane, threatening heavy flooding and wind damage.
Japan's meteorological agency described Lan as a "very large and very strong" system with winds gusts of up to 216kmph.
Bands of torrential downpour and winds will lash the southern Islands before spreading northward through today.
The tropical weather front is expected to weaken by the time it makes landfall, but storm warnings have been issued across Japan.
