The mother of a 5-year-old is grateful that her daughter has got a new breath life after a team of heart doctors from New Zealand operated her for free.
Mauzeema Khan of Navo Nadi says her daughter Fayhaa Khan had high fever three months ago and she took her to Nadi Hospital where doctors found out that her heart beat was fast.
The kindergarten student was transferred to Lautoka Hospital and doctors found out that she had a hole in the heart and that her valves were damaged.
It was then decided that she needed surgery.
A team of 30 doctors from Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland have successfully cured 15 children between the age of seven months to 13 years in the past week who were born with heart defects.
Children Heart Surgeon Kirsten Finucane(Fenacan)says 0.7% of children are born with heart defects which is a very common problem. She adds about 150 children are still awaiting surgery.
Finucan says these doctors took leave from work and raised money to do volunteer work in Fiji. This is the teams second visit to Fiji as they did similar surgeries in Lautoka last year.
