Fireworks display in Sydney to welcome the New Year

While people prepared their own celebrations or family meals to see welcome 2019, Hong Kong, Seoul, Pyongyang, Sydney, Singapore and Auckland were competing for the best firework display in the world.

Fiji, New Zealand and Australia were among the first to welcome the New Year – and China, Korea, Philippines and Taiwan followed with their light shows.

In Hong Kong, festive lights on the city’s iconic skyscrapers provided the backdrop for a fireworks, music and light show over Victoria Harbour.

French police deploy 15,000 officers amid fears of New Year yellow vest protests About 300,000 people were expected to line the waterfront.

People rushed to see the seven‑minute firework display at Marina Bay in Singapore as the clock struck midnight, despite rainy weather and cloudy skies.

In New Zealand’s biggest city, tens of thousands gathered around Auckland’s Sky Tower as lights exploded in the sky.

While in Sydney, an estimated million people crowded Sydney Harbour as Australia’s largest city rang in 2019.

The city of Beijing was holding a gala with VIP guests at the main site of the 2008 Summer Olympics.
