37 Peace Corps trainees were sworn in to become the Peace Corps Fiji’s 96th group of volunteers to serve in Fiji for the next two years.
The volunteers are specialists in youth development and have spent two months training in language, cultural and professional skills – who will be working with various government ministries, communities and workplaces in the country.
While speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, Minister for Education Rosy Akbar told the graduates that by the end of their two years in Fiji, their skills and values will pass down to the community, the teachers and children who will be inspired by their sacrifice.
The Minister highlighted that it has been 51 years since the first group of Peace Corp volunteers arrived in Fiji and since then more than 2,500 volunteers have served in support of Fiji's development objectives in areas such as Education, Health, Agriculture, Environment, Fisheries, Business Development, Women's Empowerment, Water and Sanitation as well as a range of technical and vocational specialties.
Country Director Peace Corps Fiji, Dennis McMahon told the volunteers they will return home changed persons as they will become people who can speak and enlighten other people about the way Fijians think.
