The 108 students of Suva Special School now have a new means of getting to their school after they received a new 30 seater bus worth $FJ104,350 by the Government of Japan.
The donation was implemented under Japan’s Grant Assistance and the bus was handed over by Genta Yamada, who is the First Secretary at the Japanese Embassy.
Head Teacher Makareta Musukasau says most of the children have intellectual and development disabilities which means they cannot travel on public transportation with ease.
She says parents have to accompany their children to school.
Musukasau says now the students can be picked from waiting points and be brought to school.
First Secretary at the Japanese Embassy Genta Yamada says the school has noted only 65 percent attendance rates since the old bus stopped service in July last year.
He says while the old bus was in service, the school teachers accompanied students and provided special care during pick up and drop off from school.
