Youth volunteers at the Reproductive and Family Health Association of Fiji will present a photo story exhibition to parliamentarians tomorrow demonstrating the need for Comprehensive Sexuality Education.
The youth volunteers who are aged between 12 to 24 years, will share their stories with parliamentarians through a moving photo story exhibition which portrays the issues, impacts and challenges a young person in Fiji faces in relation to their sexual and reproductive health.
The Reproductive and Family Health Association of Fiji says through these stories, the youth volunteers will call for increased access to Comprehensive Sexuality Education.
The association says in Fiji, 40% of the population are under the age of 20 and teenage pregnancy rates have increased sharply.
It says every day, young Fijians are faced with the need to make life‑changing decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.
However, many cannot access clear, evidence‑based information and lack the knowledge required to make those decisions responsibly.
The association says this leaves them vulnerable to coercion, Sexually Transmitted Infections and unintended pregnancies.
Comprehensive Sexuality Education is a sexual and reproductive health curriculum targeted towards young people.
It includes scientifically accurate information about human development, anatomy and reproductive health, as well as information about contraception, childbirth and Sexually Transmitted Infections, including HIV.
The association aims to reach the most under‑served populations and empower them to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health.
It has a static clinic based in Suva, which provides sexual and reproductive health and rights services, including family planning, STI and HIV services, prenatal care, counselling, gynaecology services.
