Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem says youths should not be the leaders of tomorrow but leaders of today because they bring in perspectives that others don’t think of.
While speaking during the launch of the Youth Voter and Elections Education Project at the Fiji National University’s Nasinu Campus, Saneem said voting is your opportunity to express your voices about political decisions that will allow you to choose leaders who are committed to the Constitution and values of dignity.
Saneem says you don’t have to be old to get the job done.
He says when he was appointed in 2014, people said that he didn’t know what he was doing because he was too young and had no experience.
There were calls in the media about not being mature, to which he responded that immature people do things that mature people wouldn’t dare.
Saneem also says voting is a way to show support for good policies, ideas and reject those that are not constructive.
He says by voting we are also making statements that our opinion matters.
The project is to encourage more youths to vote and know more about the electoral processes.
It is being done in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme.
