Students of Yat Sen Primary school pledged today in front of their parents, teachers and friends to seek assistance if they may face personal difficulties and may want to harm themselves.
This is part of the government’s “Suicide Prevention Awareness campaign” in schools around the country.
The students also had drama and dances all relating to suicide prevention.
They also had guest speakers from the Youth Champs for Mental Health.
We spoke to Sheena Penjueli who is a teacher for Year 7 at Yat Sen Primary.
She told us how all the students in her class collaborated to come up with something different to help with the prevention of suicide.
More than 900 schools in the country are getting external speakers who include counsellors, NGO representatives and church leaders to speak on suicide prevention.
There have been 89 suicides and 80 attempted suicides so far this year.
Police say there is a suicide or attempted suicide report in Fiji every one and a half day.
Students of Yat Sen Primary School took a pledge not to harm themselves and bring shame to their families. Dramas and dances relating to the theme "Suicide Prevention" were showcased.
