A woman in her 30s has passed away after the vehicle she was travelling in was involved in a head on collision with a truck yesterday.

The incident occurred along the North Coastal Road, Vacala, Taveuni.

The woman was travelling in the vehicle driven by her husband and they were accompanied by her two sons and another man, from Weilagi, when the accident occurred.

The victim's husband allegedly lost control of their vehicle causing it to veer onto the opposite lane and collided with a 12 wheeler truck.

The 56 year old suspect, his 6 year old son and another passenger are admitted at the Taveuni Hospital in critical condition.

Police say the victim's second son who is 18 year’s old has claimed to have seen his father dozing off while driving before the accident occurred, however this is still subject to investigation.

The driver of the truck escaped unharmed.

The road death toll currently stands at 55 compared to 65 for the same period last year.
