White powder, marijuana, suki, touch screen mobile phones and mobile batteries have been confiscated by the Fiji Corrections Service during a routine sweep search at the Naboro Prison today.
The Fiji Corrections Service says they have been inundated with an inflow of huge amounts of contraband being dropped off by unknown individuals in the prison compound.
They say they are committed to providing the humane treatment of offenders, but the propelling of illegal activity such as drug smuggling and infiltration of contraband’s is counterproductive to their rehabilitation efforts.
FCS says the influx of drugs has forced them to review their security protocols and one of the areas covered involves concealing contraband items with goods brought in during visitation.
As a result of this review, FCS decided to suspend the consumption of cooked food brought in by families and relatives of the prisoners during this festive season.
FCS is therefore appealing to the members of the public for their cooperation in this effort.
