The CEO of the Yaqara Pastoral Company Limited Adrian Ram says they are now strongly focusing on producing beef that will be a signature of Fiji and this will greatly help in import substitution.
It has been revealed that the bill for imported beef is about $18 million in a year.
Ram says they have made significant improvements in the quality of beef produced at Yaqara and made in-roads in Fiji’s tourism industry where hoteliers are now buying directly from them.
The Yaqara Pastoral Company Limited is selling almost 1,000 tonnes of beef in the tourism industry.
He adds major restaurants in the country also have Yaqara beef in their menu.
Ram says one of his primary functions is to sell genetically improved breeds to farmers for them to improve their herds.
The Yaqara Pastoral Company Limited currently has about 6,000 herds of cattle together with sheep and horses.
