Minister for Housing Premila Kumar says they want to help people who genuinely need their help and not people who want to make money from government subsidized land.

She highlighted this during a Community Visit to Waidamudamu Settlement in Nausori.

Kumar says the government is spending over $5 million for the upgrade of Waidamudamu Informal Settlement including a payment to Energy Fiji Limited to install a new power substation and extend the power grid to all settlers in the area.

Kumar says they have found that some members of the public have lied to get land.

She says when they got the land, their intention was to sell the land at a higher price.

The Minister says if people who gained the land the right way want to sell that land, the right way to do this is to inform the Ministry.

Kumar says for example, if the land was sold for $50,000 and government has subsidized $45,000 for that particular land, then the person selling the land will need to pay government back $45,000.

She says this is because government is paying 90% of the subsidized land.

Kumar says these are some of the policies that they have come up with.

She says this is very disappointing because the real purpose as to why they are upgrading the settlements is to assist people who really do not have a place to live.
