Correcting behaviour is a necessary measure to address misbehaviour in schools when students fail to follow school rules.
While speaking during the consultation on the No Repeat Policy, the Fijian Teachers Association General Secretary, Paula Manumanunitoga says corporal punishment is akin to a punishment issued for someone who commits a serious crime, like murder and is given leniency.
Manumanunitoga says schools aim to correct a child’s behaviour, not to tolerate severe acts like harsh physical punishment.
He adds there are specific guidelines to follow when addressing and correcting children’s behaviour in schools.
The General Secretary also highlighted that they support the repeat policy.
Manumanunitoga says they have received reports from schools that there are non-readers in secondary schools and there are readers who lack comprehension as well.
He says as human beings, when we attend school, we understand what is best for us and progress to higher levels.
Manumanunitoga adds if students are unable to succeed in one area, there are alternative options available.
