More needs to be done to protect our children and youth from the dangers of using drugs so they can live productive lives after the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Lynda Tabuya revealed that her Ministry receives reports daily and mostly from concerned parents and guardians, who have children under 18 dealing drugs on a daily basis.
Tabuya says this is a concern not just for the government but for community leaders as well.
She says we cannot ignore the challenges that our young people face, particularly when it comes to coping with stress.
Tabuya also says this threat does not only rob our youth of their potential but also undermines the very fabric of our society.
She adds families, parents and guardians simply do not know or do not have the capability to deal with a child or a youth that presents themselves at home to be using drugs.
The Minister says it is the responsibility of the government to ensure that families are able to have the support and the resources to take care of their youth and children who are dealing with drug use.
Tabuya also commended the work of the Fiji Police Force in tackling the drug trade and said that the Force cannot do it alone.
She also highlighted that last week, a man passed away due to a drug overdose.
We have sent questions to the Police regarding this case. They are yet to respond.
