Acting Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu today admitted that they need to do more to improve how they deal with victims of gender-based violence.
While speaking to 36 officers from the Southern Division Command Group undergoing training with the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, Tudravu says officers should remove pre-conceived ideas that they have about gender based violence.
He says officers should be mindful of the victim’s needs.
Tudravu says out of the calls and complaints he receives, there is always at least one domestic violence case.
He even shared that he received a complaint last night about a domestic violence case regarding a Police officer.
Tudravu also acknowledged the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre for their continuous support.
He says the FWCC is one of their external auditors who has contributed to the improvement of their services.
Tudravu says the FWCC and Police have a love and hate relationship.
He also spoke about Crisis Centre Coordinator, Shamima Ali.
The five day training is being held at Suva’s Tanoa Plaza Hotel.
It is focused on supporting the Fiji Police Force to develop best practices in responding to violence against women, girls and children in order to improve services and processes when responding to survivors.
The training will also include relevant legislations, awareness on the National Service Delivery Protocol and exploring prevention strategies.
It is supported by DFAT through FWCC.
