Fiji Employers and Commerce Federation CEO Kameli Batiweti.

Fiji Employers and Commerce Federation CEO Kameli Batiweti says we will be in deep trouble if 2021 is like 2020 as their members had to let go of about 30,000 employees last year.

In an interview with Legend FM News Batiweti says towards the last quarter of 2020, the domestic market picked up because of the festive season but that is not sufficient to get the economy into shape again.

Batiweti adds it is important that our borders do open and he understands that the government is trying its best to make that happen through travel bubbles.

He says traditionally the first quarter is low and it starts to pick up around Easter when visitor numbers pick up.

Batiweti says by March or April we should begin to see some signs if travel bubbles will be open.

He further says they will support the government in rolling out the vaccination program as they have an employee base which is quite significant.
