Minister for Health Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete says they are currently providing the COVID-19 booster shots for the vulnerable population.
According to the Health Ministry these are the frontliners, persons aged 60 years and over, persons under 60 years who have medical conditions like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, kidney disease, cancer and others, confirmed by a medical doctor at a health facility.
When presenting for the booster dose, individuals under 60 years with any of the medical condition above are requested to bring along their Vaccination Card and their SOPD Card or a letter from his or her treating doctor confirming the presence of the medical condition.
Dr Waqainabete says internationally the Centres for Disease Control has set out a guideline whereby they are suggesting providing the booster shots to those 18 years and above as an added protection for Omicron.
He says what they do know at the moment, is that after five or six months the levels of immunity can wane and that is why it is important for those in the vulnerable population to get the booster shot.
Dr Waqainabete adds they are also mindful of the fact that at the moment, they are trying to wrap up the vaccination for children aged between 12-17 years.
He says once they wrap up the vaccination for children, then they can be able to push out booster doses.
