The Education Ministry is concerned and disappointed that some parents are using their children to peddle drugs and are calling on them to stop, and determine what they stand for as parents.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police, Sakeo Raikaci, parents are using children, who are in Primary or Secondary Schools, to sell drugs in school or transport drugs to another area.
He also made the call to parents and guardians not to humiliate their children by giving them drugs to peddle, because our children are the future of the country.
Permanent Secretary for Education Selina Kuruluca says the Ministry is concerned this is happening because parents are first and foremost the protectors and providers of their children.
She stressed that involving children in such activities will harm them and their community.
Kuruleca says they are working with the Police, Social Welfare and other government agencies to try and put a stop to this.
The Permanent Secretary says to assist students, they have counsellors in all four divisions, the Substance Abuse Advisory Council, education awareness sessions, and they are hoping to partner with the Ministry of Health in promoting healthy living.
